2000 Alaska History Calendar

Excerpt:

“Transportation companies promoted the Valdez trail not so much as a route to the Klondike but one to another gold field near what became Copper Center. The "trail" was a harrowing trek up the steep Valdez Glacier followed by a dangerous ride down the raging Klutina River. The "gold field" was imaginary. Quite a few died on the trek or from scurvy during the long winter of 1897-98.”
